Chip Shortage Spirals Beyond Cars to Phones and Consoles

  • The dearth of supply is deepening as Apple, China hoard chips
  • Worsening crunch could impact sectors well beyond automaking

The first hints of trouble emerged in the spring of 2020. The world was in the early throes of a mysterious pandemic, which first obliterated demand then super-charged internet and mobile computing when economies regained their footing. That about-face -- in a span of months -- laid the seeds for potentially the most serious shortage in years of the semiconductors that lie at the heart of everything from smartphones to cars and TVs.

Auto and electronics makers that cut back drastically in the early days of the outbreak are now rushing to re-up orders, only to get turned away because chipmakers are stretched to the max supplying smartphone giants like Apple Inc. This week, Qualcomm Inc.’s Cristiano Amon, head of the world’s largest mobile chipmaker, flagged shortages “across the board,” citing the industry’s reliance on just a handful of players in Asia.

Amon joined a growing chorus of industry leaders warning in recent weeks they can’t get enough chips to make their products. Carmakers appear in direst straits and have spurred the U.S. and German governments to come to their aid -- General Motors Co. this month was forced to mothball three North American plants and Ford Motor Co. is bracing for a 20% drop in near-term output. But more industries have lately copped to shortages, emphasizing how Covid-19 and a boom in a new breed of 5G-ready smartphones like the iPhone 12 is exacerbating a shortage of capacity plaguing the entire consumer industry. Chip shortages are expected to wipe out $61 billion of sales for automakers alone, but the hit to the much larger electronics industry -- while tough to quantify at this early stage -- could be far larger.

Apple, a major Qualcomm customer, said recently that sales of some new high-end iPhones were hemmed in by a shortage of components. Europe’s NXP Semiconductors NV and Infineon Technologies AG -- whose roles near the top of the supply chain grant them visibility over global chip flows -- have both indicated the constraints are no longer confined to autos. And Sony Corp. said Wednesday it might be unable to fully sate demand for its new gaming console in 2021 because of production bottlenecks.

“The virus pandemic, social distancing in factories, and soaring competition from tablets, laptops and electric cars are causing some of the toughest conditions for smartphone component supply in many years,” said Neil Mawston, an analyst with Strategy Analytics. He estimates prices for key smartphone components including chipsets and displays have risen as much as 15% in the past three to six months.

Nuvvu cheppe every word is pure BS. What you wrote is just to defend the failures of the Govt. No one stops the govt encouraging the small players. Private sector ni encourage cheyyadam ante Ambani ki Adani ki dhochi pettamani kaadhu. China's manufacturing strength is not the players like Ambani and Adanis there. There are millions of small scale retail manufactures. Govt plays major role in providing that sort of eco system. In 90s number of Chinese dipomats went to the countries like Sweden, Denmark, Germany and had join ventures. Used their technology and the low cost labour in China to create the whole manufacturing industry in large scales.

Inka Vishaka Steel plant gurunchi nuvvu edhaidho cheppavo, discussion kooda waste. Bone of contention with Vizag steel plant is valuation and sentiment to some extent. Private players ki icche captive mining Vishaka plant ki ivvadam lo no issues. Privatization cheyyakunda kooda Vishaka capacity 7.5 mil tonnes/year and it second biggest in the country. It doesn't need special encouragement to improve the manufacturing. Linking Vishaka plant to over all manufacturing industry  is like bodi gundu mokalu link pettadam.

Ippatakippudu production undalani cheppadam ledhu. Due to elecrotic and autonomous vehicles chip shortage too much untadhanta in coming years. And Biden dheeni meedha special ga concentrate chesthunnadu ani news kooda undhi. Large scale lo produce chesevi around the world only a handful of players in Asia anta. There is big vaccum already and this vaccum is going to increase. That's the reason to act now and to have something operating from 2024/25. Govt should take proactive role in this. Chinese companies kooda unable to cater the needs. Vallatho tieup ayyi or some companies in Europe/US help India plan cheyyalani. Make in India ani just buzz aithe undhi kaani electronic manufacturing lo we are lagging far behind and its good source of money. China start chesinappudu money ledhu. And ippudu Vietnam workign well. Grama volunteer or MGNREGA lanti outdated programmes ni remove chesi village level vallaki kontha trining icchi chip manufacturing lanti areas lo ki maralchali. Bangladesh and vietnam is capturing all companies moving out of china. Yesterday i read one article that japanese companies now prefers Bangladesh for setting up manufacturing plants.

Bangladesh is fastest growing economy now. Where as India is 164th place in growth.

Kaka you have the right zeal but your understanding of semiconductor industry is very  scant .

China is spending close to 10$ billion / year subsidy from 90's , it is much higher if you take the university programs . And they still haven't gotten close to making commercially viable semi conductor fab . SMIC is hopeful to make a viable fab by 2025

It will take 20-25 years of continuous research programs to create a pool of talented individuals and then further research grants to make it viable .

Indian govt is unable to even spend 10 mil per year in ressearch funding  , forget even dreaming about such stuff.

You can't create them out of thin air , it takes a long term planning , funding and commitment .

Modi or congress both slaves to bania industrialists , they don't want to sign free trade agreements and reduce import taxes .

Without joining international supply chains , you can't expect international companies willing to relocate here . Bangladesh , Vietnam does not have powerful domestic lobby to stop this .

Protectionism in the guise of Nationalism has never worked anywhere in the world .

Small example , ask all the IT services companies to only use indian made platforms or levy import tax on foreign platforms made by Microsoft , SAP, red hat ,etc  .

All of them will shift overseas in less than a year or close down .

We don't bat an eye when the same thing is happening to all manufacturing sectors .

Aathmanirbar is a huge scam on indian consumers but we are too dumb to look beyond nationalist rhetoric

On the contrary, protectionism has worked in every country it was practised. Eg. US until the 1980s, China since the 1980s, East Asia in the 70s through 00's.. Japan since the 50s. Everywhere it has worked.

I think Indian upper middle class overestimate the extent of tech related manufacturing possible in India. Sure there may be some industrious entrepreneurs who can make it work, but they would still need to buy supplies from outside.

Govt investment will help, but like you mentioned earlier it's a long game.

But protectionism does help, if it is tactical.
