Mumbai: An office-bearer of the BJP is a Bangladeshi and had been staying in the country with fake documents, said Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh.

Rubel Jonu Sheikh, head of the BJP’s north Mumbai minority cell, had obtained an Aadhaar card and PAN card but later the Mumbai police found that the 24 North Parganas address and school details in West Bengal furnished by him were fake.

Taking a dig at the BJP, Deshmukh wondered how the party made him an office-bearer without checking his documents or verifying his credentials.

Deshmukh had ordered an investigation into the matter.

Speaking over this, BJP vice president Chitra Wagh said her party would not defend any wrongdoing, if any, on the part of Shaikh but added the MVA government must show “similar enthusiasm” to find out similar cases in the NCP, Congress and other parties.

The 24-year-old Sheikh was arrested by Mumbai Police in a crackdown on illegal immigrants and was booked under sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Passport Act and the Foreigners Act.

Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh on Saturday said police investigation has revealed that the Mumbai BJP leader who was recently arrested by the Mumbai Police is a Bangladeshi national and had been living illegally in Mumbai since 2011.

The BJP leader, Rubel Jonu Sheikh, president of BJP's North Mumbai Minority Cell, is accused of obtaining Indian citizenship using false documents.

Home Minister Anil Deshmukh said police have collected several evidence to establish that Rubel Jonu Sheikh is a Bangladeshi national.

Recently, the police arrested 24-year-old Shaikh in a crackdown on illegal immigrants and booked him under sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Passport Act and the Foreigners Act.

Police investigation has reportedly revealed that he is a Bangladeshi national who had been living in Mumbai illegally since 2011.

Sources said Shaikh prepared fake identity cards such as PAN and Adhaar card with the help of fake documents.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) spokesperson Mahesh Tapase had lodged a complaint with Home Minister Anil Deshmukh alleging that Rubel Jonu Sheikh was a Bangladeshi national and had obtained Indian citizenship using fake documents.

Hitting out at the BJP, Mahesh Tapase asked if it will take responsibility for this and how did it make Sheikh an office-bearer without verifying his identity.

Home Minister Anil Deshmukh had ordered an investigation into the matter.

Sources say, in documents, Rubel Jonu Sheikh showed he was a resident of Malapota gram panchayat in West Bengal's 24 North Parganas district. His school's name was shown as Bolganda Adarsh High School in West Bengal's Nadia district.

However, when a police team went to Malapota gram panchayat and inquired about him, they came to know that the panchayat does not have any resident named Rubel Jonu Sheikh.

When documents were verified at the Nadia district collector's office, it was found that the school-leaving certificate held by Rubel Jonu Sheikh was issued in someone else's name.

The investigation has also found that the school mentioned in his documents does not exist in Nadia.

Home Minister Anil Deshmukh said the investigation has also revealed that Rubel Jonu Sheikh's Aadhar and PAN card were also procured using fake documents.

ఆ తర్వాత బీజేపీలో చేరి స్థానిక నేతగా పేరు సంపాదించుకున్నాడు. ఆపై స్థానిక బీజేపీ నేత, ఎంపీ గోపాల్ శెట్టికి అనుచరుడుగా మారాడు. అతడు ఉత్తర ముంబై మైనారిటీ సెల్ చీఫ్‌గా పనిచేస్తున్నట్టు సామాజిక మాధ్యమాల్లోనూ వార్తలు చక్కర్లు కొట్టాయి. అంతేకాదు, ఎంపీతో అతడు కలిసి ఉన్న ఫొటోలు కూడా వైరల్ అవుతున్నాయి. ఫోర్జింగ్ చేసిన ధ్రువీకరణ పత్రాలతో అతడు భారత్‌లో అక్రమంగా నివసిస్తున్నట్టు గుర్తించిన ముంబై పోలీసులు ఈ నెల మొదట్లో అతడిని అరెస్ట్ చేశారు.

ఇదే విషయమై బీజేపీ ఎంపీ గోపాల్ శెట్టి మాట్లాడుతూ ఇది చాలా చిన్న విషయమని కొట్టిపడేశారు. అతడిని ఎవరో తనకు పరిచయం చేస్తే ఫొటో తీసుకున్నాడని అన్నారు. ఇప్పుడు దానిని వైరల్ చేస్తున్నారని అన్నారు. తనను ఎంతోమంది కలుస్తుంటారని అన్నారు.
