Centre Gives Double Shock To Andhra!

The Narendra Modi government on Monday gave a double shock to Andhra Pradesh in Parliament, pushing the Jagan Mohan Reddy government into an embarrassing situation.

The first shock was on Visakhapatnam Steel Plant privatisation. In a written reply to Vizag MP M V Satyanarayana, Union finance minister Nirmala Sitaraman made it clear that there is no question of going back on the privatisation of the steel plant.

She said the state government had no say in the steel plant privatisation issue, as it had no equity in the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited.

She said the Centre had already held negotiations with the Jagan Mohan Reddy government and asked it to extend support whenever it was required.

She said the Centre would go ahead with 100 per cent disinvestment in the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant.

“The decision was taken only to improve its productivity. The privatisation would increase direct and indirect employment in the steel plant,” Nirmala said.

The second shock was with regard to construction of Ramayapatnam port in Gudlur mandal in Prakasam district.

Union minister for ports Mansukh Mandaviya, in his written reply to a question raised by Bharatiya Janata Party MP T G Venkatesh, said the Centre won’t be able to extend any help for the construction of Ramayapatnam port.

As per the AP Reorganisation Act, the Centre has to construct a major port at Dugarajapatnam in Nellore. However, the NDA government has withdrawn the project on the pretext of lack of financial feasibility.

In lieu of Dugarajapatnam port, the previous TDP government proposed an alternative site at Ramayapatnam for the construction of a new port and the proposal had been pending with the Centre for the last few years.

Now, the NDA government rejected even this Ramayapatnam port. In his reply, the Union minister said Ramayapatnam port does not fall under the major port category and hence the Centre cannot take it up as per the bifurcation act.

“If the Centre has to take up Ramayapatnam port, it has to make amendments to the AP Reorganisation Act, so as to bring the minor port into the central purview,” the minister said.
