sc/st are collection of castes under a scheduled list.. same with brahmins, kshatriyas, vaishyas.. they are collection of castes that claim to be have a lineage.

vanniyars were the backbone of DMK not so long ago. Karunanidhi in 1990 created a section within BC called Most backward caste to give specific group pf castes (including vanniyar) reservation of 20% for that section.
