-- MY EXPERIENCE SENDING OXYGEN CONCENTRATOR FROM USA TO INDIA --
Hello friends- I recently sent an OC from NJ to Delhi. Here is my detailed experience.
Note: This is my personal experience and not medical advice. Pl decide based on your own research.
What to buy:
There are two types of OC’s Pulse or Continuous.
Pulse Pros:
Smaller (portable)
Easier to ship
May not need a prescription to order
Pulse Cons:
Gives a puff of oxygen.
Better for general use.
About $2000
Continuous Pros:
Better for Covid purpose (my opinion. not medical advice)
About $1500 (a little cheaper)
Gives stronger continuous flow of Oxygen
Continuous Cons:
Needs a doc prescription to order. Any doctor would be fine
Heavier than Pulse. (18 lbs minimum)
What did I buy?
I chose a continuous model. Inogen At Home.
From Where To Buy:
If you google there are a few suppliers. All are equally good. They will take your details and ship you one in 2-3 days in US. They will not ship to India.
Shipping to India:
This is a bit challenging and may have many issues:
Step 1: Find a courier service: Generally there are three options, Fedex, UPS and DHL.
I chose Fedex, and had to pay $700 shipping fee from NJ to Delhi.
Step 2: The package reaches India in 3-5 days.
This is when I was contacted by Fed Ex Customs Clearing Agent.
They would first call the local phone number. Then send an email to the local person.
tip: Make sure you give 100% correct local phone number and email. Also, it's better to give the phone to someone who can handle a quick conversation. My mom found it challenging to communicate properly.
Step 3: The agent will send you a bunch of forms, PAN AADHAR etc, End-Use, Declaration etc.
IMP NOTE: Request the agents to clear the shipment as “Courier” and not “Cargo”. This will save you precious days. Have a doctor's prescription if needed in an emergency.
Step4: After a few emails back and forth, Fed-ex got my package cleared.
Costs of Custom: Though the duty is waived, but I still had to pay 28% gst.
The next day I received the OC at my home.
India Energy/ Power Requirement:
Read labels carefully. Some models are made for the global operation and would work on 200V. Others would need a converter. Inogen At Home worked in India without a converter.
Total cost: Total cost by about Rs Two Lacs Twenty Thousand ($1700 + $700 + Rs 46,000)
Total Days: About 7 days from order here to receive in India.
Total Time: A lot, on calls and arranging customs in India.
Tip: I think I paid too much for shipping. Also, I bout a higher-end model. If you have time feel free to shop. These OC machines starts at $700, but are heavier.
