Behind The Scene: Jagan Abolishes Aided Colleges!

In a major decision that goes a long way in the higher education sector, the Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy government in Andhra Pradesh has decided to do away with the aided-private colleges in the state with effect from coming academic year.

Aided colleges are those which are run by the private managements from the grants-in-aid from the state government.

The lecturers working in their colleges get their salaries from the government under grants-in-aid formula, but are not treated as regular government lecturers.

The state cabinet which met in the secretariat on Tuesday decided that this grants-in-aid system should be done away with. Hereafter, they should be run completely by the private managements as private institutions, or should be handed over to the government.

“If the private managements want to run these colleges, they should surrender the aided lecturers to the government which would accommodate them in various vacancies in the government colleges. If they hand over the colleges to the government, the names of the colleges would remain unchanged,” an official note said.

The cabinet also decided to make it compulsory for all the private universities in the state to allot 35 per cent of the seats under Convenor quota, which would be decided by the government. This would enable poor people get admissions in private universities compulsorily.

The government has also decided to introduce CBSE syllabus in all the state government schools in a phased manner by 2024-25. There would be no state syllabus. An agreement to this effect was entered into with the CBSE.
