Once he gave this analogy that might offend lot of people and it did me for a while as well. He said that real software engineers are like the engineers who design and build cars/automobiles on different specs. And IT guys are like mechanics who know how to make them work and does take care of regular maintenance and fix if some issue occurs. I know every job has it's own dignity and this analogy is not from me, I am just quoting here what he mentioned in his quora post. Peace!
