Property taxes are high around 2.24%, almost 3 times that of North carolina 0.84%. But the public schools are top notch in chicago suburbs. If you look at the top 10 public school districts in the US, 4 of them are from chicago suburbs. https://www.niche.com/k12/search/best-school-districts/ 3. Income tax, Illinois - flat 4.95%;NC - Flat 5.25% 4. Most importantly you need to factor the cost difference between new job benefits and the current benefits. 5. Weather - There will be a lot of snow days in chicago area starting from oct until feb. I don't know about the weather in NC. Summers are good in chicago, not a lot of natural wonders to go around but the city of chicago to go around during summer. I feel 125-130K plus any difference in reasonable ask.
