We plant green gram as the third crop after paddy is harvested in January . It usually takes 70-80 days to harvest depending on the weather .

We don't spend much money as the crop doesn't need any fertiliser or watering . But we do spray pesticides two times at 15 th day and around 50 th day.

Two varieties were planted IPM 2-14 on the right , WGG 42 (new warangal version) on the left .

Due to heavy rains our crop got delayed by 15-20 days and as a result the crop output fell as much as 40% over last year.

The Telangana version we planted this year is not suitable to our land / crop season . While it is successful in other areas , it only produced 200 kg/ acre

IPM 2-14 is an old version but more suitable to our land . Even with adverse climate we got close to 350 kg / acre .

Overall we got above to 2.5 tons from ten acres  this season compared to 4 tons last year .

We hand harvest the seeds and leave the leaves as manure for paddy .

Here is a sample plant with it seeds harvested

Minapappu is black gram which is a sister crop of green gram .

Even the plants and seeds look the same except color .

Blackgram can be irrigated but green gram will die instantly if they are watered .it also takes longer to harvest like 90-100 days . We don't have enough time in between for the third crop , so that's why we usually avoid black gram.

Kandipappu is totaly different . It's generally grown in arid areas  and takes even longer to harvest . Last 30 years ga memu eppudu veyamimages?q=tbn:ANd9GcTGY686FZh3hzMEfy2WLbi

Good yield entha baa

600 kg / acre but it will need planting in a row with seed driller and occasional irrigation with sprinklers .

We don't bother doing it because it would need extra labour and equipment .

Basically this is our leisure crop , once we spray the seeds we will forget about this crop . Low cost and less work needed .

Rayalaseema, Guntur side pessalu is main crop for some areas  , they will focus more and get good yields
