It is 50k to 75K inr per day on avg in mid range hospitals, we paid 5 lakhs for 2 members for 5 days, our case was mild (had 1st dose of vaccine)

Went to hospital just for evaluation on 13th day of covid, doctors made us to get admitted as a safe side for observation and ended up with 5 lakhs bill.

Not sure whether to believe doctors or not these days, felt they exploited us.

Here's what a friend of mine said:

U don’t have to budge to their threatenings. Its the right of the family to take the dead body from the hospital. It’s against the law for the hospitals to keep the dead body and not hand over to the concerned family.
There is a High Court ruling that if any charges pending from the family (even if they charge genuinely according to the govt proposed rates) the hospital has to first handover the body and then later settle pending dues with family. Here anyways they are charging over the board which is absolutely illegal.
U can just approach the police. They will simply handover the body in minutes. If the hospital doesn’t agree then the police can file a case on the hospital.

He shouldn't have paid.

Did the hospital blackmail him saying they won't release the person's body unless paid that full amount

Money was a thing we never thought about . We lost a loved one. We still never even discussed about money we are only worried about kids . Btw no one threatened us . In fact we influenced for special care . We have an IPS in our family . There wasn’t ever a discussion like this .

Not handing over the body is something that happened during the time of Zamindars. People who died were denied cremation if they did not pay taxes or did not give away their share of grains. It is sad that we have gone back to those days or at least have regressed unintentionally.
