Things Mao did was :

a) Abolish traditional elites

b) Absolute freedom for women. No man can dictate  what a woman can do, her choice must be respected.

c) Abolish social evils

d) Put workers in the middle of society. Forced land reform. They never had slums in their cities even in 1950s when they were poorer than india. They never allowed a working man to suffer basic things.

e) Workers/Politicians/Engineers/Doctors forced to go to rural areas and work along with farmers and peasants.

f) Build an army from farmers.

g) All education was not only free but all education was equal to everyone. No private schools for elites until much later.

Ofcourse some mistakes happened. But roughly thats what he did.

Thokkale.  communism or capitalism does not matter as much as social equality.
