Lawmakers come down hard on nationalists for anti-Pakistan slogans

MUHAMMAD SABIH

June 08, 2021

KARACHI   -  Vandalism and anti-Pakistan slogans by workers of Sindhi nationalist parties at Bahria Town triggered outrage in the Provincial Assmebly on Monday as Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) wanted to table a resolution to condemn the incident but resorted to protest when Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani refused to take up any matter ahead of agenda items.

Muhammad Hussain Khan of MQM-P rose right after Dua (prayer) in a bid to move the resolution but was denied by the Speaker. “I will give you time but let us finish the business (Assmebly’s agenda) first,” the Speaker said.

When the MQM-P lawmaker kept reading out his resolution while his microphone was turned off, Durrani reminded him that he was not allowed by the chair.

“This drama will not be permitted. This house will be run according to this book,” the Speaker said while displaying a book of rules and procedure in his hand.

Hussain said that thousands of ‘miscreants’ resorted to violence and raised “Pakistan Na Khappay, Sindhudesh Khappay” (We don’t want Pakistan but Sindhudesh) slogans in the protest held on Sunday.

The protesting lawmakers then gathered in front of the Speaker’s dice and chanted “Pakistan Zindabad” (Long Live Pakistan) and “Sindh Government Na Khappay” slogans before making a walk out.

Later, the PTI members came back but MQM-P didn’t. In the meantime, all agenda was taken up hurriedly as most of the business was moved by lawmakers belonging to PTI and MQM-P who opted to protest instead.

Pakistan Zindabad

Referring to the violent incidents in Bahria Town, Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Shah made it clear that those who chanted slogans or spoke against the country would not be spared. “Stern action would be taken against those who were involved in it,” he added.

Nasir and others PPP members also chanted “Paksitan Zindabad” slogans.

He also lambasted the two opposition parties and said that the PTI and MQM-P just wanted to ‘create’ scene in the house as they always opted to protests than to speak on the issues.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla said that Pakistan had always been priority to the PPP. He said the PPP knew well how to deal with those who spoke against the country and about division of Sindh. “Pakistan is our motherland and we will not tolerate any thing against it,” he said. Chawla also criticised the PTI and MQM-P for ‘spoiling the atmosphere of the house’. He recalled that the two opposition parties’ members had also created scenes during the two previous sittings and disturbed the house.

He deplored that the opposition members created disturbances to hinder the business of the house despite the chair had assured them that they would be given floor to speak on the issue.

Chawla said that the humiliating defeat of PTI and MQM-P in the by-election of NA-249 in Karachi had exposed the popularity of two opposition parties.

PPP MPA Shamim Mumtaz also came down heavily on the PTI and MQM-P for staging protest and boycott, saying that two party members had been violating the sanctity of the house by their hooliganism. She said that the opposition of a resolution on water scarcity in the province, moved during one of the earlier sessions, had exposed the ‘loyalty’ of the two opposition parties in the eyes of people of the province. PPP’s Jam Shabbir Ali said that the opposition parties only criticised the provincial government for the sake of criticism, but not for reform. He said that it was now an open secret how injustices were being committed with Sindh, but the opposition parties were keeping a mum for the rights of the province.

“Police martyrs’ families will be looked after properly”

Meanwhile, the Assembly unanimously passed The Sindh (Repeal of Police Act,1861 and Revival of Police Order 2002) (Amendment) Bill, 2021 for what the government termed to look after the martyrs’ families properly. Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Mukesh Kumar Chawla moved the bill revealing that ‘now the family member of a martyr could be provided job up to BPS-11 rank’.

Later, the house was adjourned to Tuesday (today).
