In South India, Congress VS BJP fight is barely visible in 20-30 places, mostly its three way fight with third player being a  local/regional party. South India's 150 odd seats, BJP comes first in may be 20 seats, second in another 20 seats but far away from being a formidable force in another 100 seats. 

But the same time, Congress is not winning those seats either. TN,Kerela,AP,TG itself has 100 seats where BJP does not even have a proper face to put up for for contest.

South's regional players are big dent to Congress and advantage to BJP. 

BJP just needs to make sure lotus blooms in central and north India and with fewer allies from south, they can form the government but same is not the case with Congress, they need a zillion allies now.
