Okay Tesla creates those hats when he is testing that machine.they are all duplicates of the original hat of angier.like wise angier goes inside that machine and he creates a duplicate of himself just to entertain the audience in that transporting man trick.

manaki film beginning lone the very first shot he shows us is those hats.he is telling us that both the rivals are using duplicates of their own selves.Alfred has a twin brother who is a duplicate of him.angier doesn’t know this.he goes to Tesla and asks for machine that would create a duplicate of him.those cats, those hats,those pigeons.. those dialogues that come in between..reveal this fact at every stage. But we won’t be noticing the real meaning of all those details throught the film.
