Muslims are found in almost all states of India and they do speak a variety of languages same as the Hindus or Jains. The languages they speak depends on the place they live or the place from where they migrated to the place they live.

The major languages spoken by Indian Muslims include Urdu, Bengali, Malayalam, Beary, Kashmiri, Gujarati, Kutchi, Konkani, Tamil, Marathi and Telugu.

  1. Urdu - Muslims of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh mostly speak Urdu as their mother tongue.
Since Urdu language is a standardized register of the Hindustani language, the other standardized register being Hindi, Muslims speaking Urdu generally understand and speak Hindi too.
Urdu speaking Muslims are also found in the states of Haryana, Punjab and in cities like Mumbai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Bangalore where they migrated due to various reasons.
Muslims living in the Deccan plateau region, i.e. in Telangana, plateau regions of Maharashtra and Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, parts of Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh speak a distinct dialect of Urdu known as the Deccani Urdu which is highly influenced by the local languages, mostly Marathi, Telugu and Kannada. Muslims in cities like Hyderabad, Aurangabad, Bangalore, Mysore speak Deccani Urdu. These Muslims are mostly bilingual in either Marathi, Kannada, Telugu or Tamil depending on the region.
  2. Bengali - Muslims living in the Indian states of West Bengal, Assam and Tripura have Bengali as their mother tongue. They also live in cities like New Delhi and Mumbai.
  3. Malayalam/Beary - Muslims living in the Indian state of Kerala speak Malayalam as their mother tongue. Those living in Dakshin Kannada district of Karnataka speak Beary, a language similar to Malayalam.
  4. Kashmiri - Muslims of the Kashmir valley speak the Kashmiri language. Dogri and Punjabi are languages of the Muslims in Jammu.
  5. Gujarati/Kutchi - Muslims of the Indian state of Gujarat have Gujarati as their mother tongue. Kutchi is spoken by the Muslims of Kutch in Gujarat. They also live in cities like Mumbai.
  6. Konkani/Marathi - The Muslims of coastal Maharashtra, Goa and coastal Karnataka speak either the Konkani or the Marathi languages. Large number of Konkani Muslims live in Mumbai. Many Muslim families in districts like Pune, Kolhapur, Satara of Maharashtra also speak Marathi at home.
  7. Tamil - Muslims in Tamil Nadu state either speak Tamil or Deccani Urdu as their mother tongue depending on the place they live.
  8. Apart from these, Indian Muslims also speak Punjabi, Telugu, Assamese, Kannada and many more local languages of India.
