FROM QUORA- not my answer.

I would love to spend five hours riding a 700 page essay on this because there are so many good answers to this and it would take a lot of explaining to make it make sense but look at the world that you have around you. Think about all of the things that you use in your daily life that you don't pay for. Think about how you know that when you turn on the shower in the morning clean water will come out and it will be hot and when you need to drink it it will be healthy, in fact it will prevent tooth decay. Perhaps you have a radio that you wake up to. the radio is tuned to a station that is regulated by the Federal communications commission because say Bluetooth uses a certain frequency band and airplanes use a certain frequency band and the military use a certain frequency band there's only a certain frequency band that your radio station can be on in that needs to be regulated, it also requires radio towers which are probably the largest and tallest thing that you can see in your neighborhood. I live in San Francisco and it's huge.

So then you open up the fridge and little did you realize that every single house in America is connected by wires to the power grid, the same power grid and there is nuclear power and coal power and renewable power and all of that is what is supplying your electricity for your fridge. you grab some food and you know that the food and drug administration has approved that food for eating so that you don't get sick and get Ebola is there. And if you did get Ebola you could have a lawsuit that will be fair and equitable. to walk out of your front door onto the sidewalk that was paved by magic and just appeared and the road that you either drive on or take a bus on had to have been paved by someone right? If you're on the bus then someone had to create the infrastructure for that bus system right? Or how about all those times you've never gotten into a car accident that killed you because of all of these very well-placed signs and well managed traffic signal lights that you don't think about ever. And then when you get to work you know that you will have your wages paid based on payroll law that is upheld by are supreme Court, and you also have the benefits of the corporation group working for being subject to the laws of this securities and exchange commission so that you know that your work is well it's work but it's regulated in such a way that you don't have anything to worry about really with that transaction. You do some work and you get paid. You never really have to worry about arguing with your boss about getting paid. then when you go home at night. You don't have to worry about getting mugged because there's a police force and you don't have to worry about your house being robbed because of that police force and also you don't have to worry about it catching on fire because of the fireman. And you probably got that job using in the education that you did not pay for.

Specialized and now think about the things that you have paid for. Rent, food, and entertainment.
