Former New Zealand allrounder Chris Cairns is on life support at a Canberra hospital after recently collapsing with a health problem in Australia, New Zealand media reported on Tuesday.

Cairns, 51, had undergone several operations after suffering a heart problem but had not responded to treatment as hoped, Newshub reported.

Newshub said Cairns had suffered an aortic dissection in his heart in Canberra last week. An aortic dissection is a tear in the body's main artery.

New Zealand's players' union was unable to provide immediate comment. A New Zealand Cricket (NZC) spokesman said the board was respecting Cairns' right to privacy and declined to comment on the situation.

Cairns was one of the best allrounders of his era, especially in the shorter formats. He played 62 Tests, 215 ODIs and two T20Is for New Zealand between 1989 and 2006, before becoming a television pundit.

Former New Zealand cricketer Chris Cairns off life support after heart surgery

  • All-rounder able to communicate with family from hospital
  • Fifty-one-year-old suffered ‘major medical event’ this month

Former New Zealand all-rounder Chris Cairns is off life support and recovering in hospital after emergency surgery in Sydney for a heart problem, his lawyer said on Friday.

“I’m pleased to advise that Chris is off life support and has been able to communicate with his family from hospital in Sydney,” Aaron Lloyd said in a statement.

“He and his family are thankful for all of the support and well wishes from everyone, and for the privacy they have been afforded. They request that this continues as they focus on his recovery moving forward.”

Cairns, 51, had surgery in Canberra after a “major medical event” earlier this month but the seriousness of his condition required him to be transferred to St Vincent’s for another operation.

New Zealand media reported Cairns had suffered an aortic dissection – a tear in the body’s main artery.

Cairns played 62 Tests, 215 one-day internationals and two Twenty20 matches for New Zealand between 1989-2006. His father Lance also played cricket for New Zealand.

Cairns has lived in Canberra with his wife and children for several years.

Chris Cairns paralysed after stroke during heart surgery

The former allrounder will undertake "a significant rehabilitation process" at a specialist hospital

Former New Zealand allrounder Chris Cairns is paralysed in his legs after suffering a stroke in his spine following emergency heart surgery in Sydney, New Zealand media reported on Friday.

Cairns, 51, had returned to his home city Canberra but remained in a serious condition, reports said, citing a statement from his lawyer Aaron Lloyd.

"During the life-saving emergency heart surgery Chris underwent in Sydney he suffered a stroke in his spine. This has resulted in paralysis in his legs," the statement said. "As a result he will be undertaking a significant rehabilitation process at a specialist spinal hospital in Australia.

"Chris and his family remain appreciative of the immense public support as they deal with this difficult time. They also appreciate the way in which their privacy has been respected.

"Chris and his family now want to focus on spending time together where possible and making whatever progress they can in his recovery. We will update everyone when there is more news, but that is likely to be some time away."

Cairns, the son of former Test player Lance Cairns, played 62 Tests and 215 ODIs for New Zealand between 1989 and 2006.

He came off life support last week after surgery at a Sydney hospital. New Zealand media reported Cairns had suffered an aortic dissection - a tear in the body's main artery - in Canberra earlier this month.
