Both, he was a master at understanding cricket. His students included Gavaskar, Vengsarkar, Rohit Sharma from our times among several prominent players. 

HIs son Jatin also played well at the Ranji level for Mumbai ranji team which was at that time, best in the nation

Even his father Vasoo sir is not top class player but very useful one but is fantastic at spotting talent and grooming them..

Sachin, Dravid, Kambli , Sourav in their early days have been through his eyes..

He got chance when 2 teams played one at 1998 Commonwealth games & one at Saharacup although looked good and then injury and couldn't make a come back to Indian team.

Kontha mandi anthe bro they may not be great players themselves but they have an eye for fine details which makes them excellent coaches

They won't, example is Sachin. 

Sachin is a very self centered player and has always been that way, so vaadu coach ayithe utter flop avuthadu
