The big difference is none of the candidates matter much in Gujarat bjp they all won in the name of modi . 

But punjab congress won on the name of Amrinder Singh , rahul gandhi did not even campaign in state 

Karnataka bjp is an apt comparison but they seemed to have convinced yedyurappa and had a smooth transition
