Those detention centers are managed by GoI.

British governed it under the bengal presidency and then spun it off as north eastern frontier as a separate administrative region, which comprised of naga hills, mizoram etc.

it was a large and diverse territory, including even bangladeshi sylhet. It was again partitioned into eastern and western bengal, and Assam was under western bengal then.

the idea of assam as an ethnic group comes from the ahom kingdom. but modern assam, and even large parts of british assam were not part of the ahom kingdom. large part of what is Assam today was ceded by burmese after the anglo burmese war. The entire portion west of kamrup district was part of cooch behar kingdom whose capital was in Bengal. So bengalis were always living in that region. so to claim that assamese have natural right to these areas is just silly.

now there is some merit to assamese nationalist claims that bengal was imposed on assamese speakers during the regions reign under colonial bengal under the british. and that Assamese need their own identity.

also Assamese and Bengali are almost the same language, and they can understand each other well. It was the british that enforced an official language 'bengal' on Assamese territory after them having tasted partial independence as a separate province for a couple of decades in late 1800s. .

xenophobic displays of assamese nationalism started when the area was under british governance itself in the 1930s. British civil servant cs mullen in a report talks about how 'hordes of muslim immigrants invading and changing the assamese culture'. So your idea that it was India that fueled this, is just plain wrong.

the Assamese were not even majority speakers in the region that were claimed for assam during linguistic division of india states, and assamese ran campaigns in the 50s trying to convince bengalis in goalpara district (which was at the time the largest district in assam and bengali majority) to identify themselves as assamese so areas can come under Assamese control.

so for assamese to simply claim all that land is theirs is just unacceptable.

assamese nationalists in fact demand detention camps to be built or the bengalis be settled elsewhere. since settling them elsewhere is impossible, the detention centers were built.

I asked about evidence of "genocide" of assamese against bengalis during british era what you gave me is a statement of a british civil servant. why do you act like such a weasel ?  Also the statement seems to imply British tried to fuel to and were unsuccessful. How come india facilitated genocides so well ?

Detention centers willbe run in Bangalore also in future. Even DMK govt is rounding up 'illegal bangladeshis' in TN to send them to detention centers. So what does it have to do with the murderous Assamese nationalist ideology?
