Mark Zuckerberg has apologized after Facebook was effectively removed from the internet for at least seven hours last night when a faulty update file was sent to the company's core servers. The Facebook founder, who saw some $7billion wiped off his personal fortune during the outage, wrote on his page that he was 'sorry for the disruption' before adding 'I know how much you rely on our services'. The apology was immediately attacked from all sides, with those who rely on Facebook for business accusing him of not taking the issue seriously enough while casual users accused him of 'making yourself more important than you are'. Still more people said they had enjoyed the break, and are now planning to spend less time online. Problems began on Monday at midday Eastern Time when Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger all stopped updating. It came after an update of the company's servers that went awry, effectively disconnecting them from the internet along with all the systems needed to fix the problem, from digital engineering tools to messaging services, even key-fob door locks. Insiders claimed the problem was made worse because large numbers of staff are still working from home after the pandemic, meaning it took them longer to get to server rooms to manually fix the issue.
