Anything you can get your hands on nowadays . 

Xbox or PlayStation is sold out instantly since production is very limited

XBOX Series X/S or PS 5 are next generation consoles that are in the market.

XBOX Series X > X BOX Series S in terms of Hardware specs and pricing. But X BOX series S is easier to find than a XBOX Series X. I have heard people not being able to get one after trying for months. XBOX Series X has more storage (1 TB ) and has ability to read from discs. Series S has 512 GB storage and no disc reader. Expandable storage is costly for these.

PS 5 has disc and digital editions similar to XBOX Series X/S.

I personally own a series X which i bought a month or so ago. Most games are available on both platforms but there are a few which are platform specific. If you have any limitations like that then the choice should be obvious. Go with the platform which has the game that you want.

If your son is a beginner gamer and you don't want to spend a ton of money on games, try game pass ultimate which XBOX has and it gives you options to try out over 100 games without you having to buy everyone of them. Game pass ultimate is a monthly subscription which costs $14.99. During black Friday, you'll find retailers offering discounts on Game pass subscriptions. You can save on the subscription that way.

PS5 has play station plus i believe similar to game pass, but I have heard there are not so many games compared to game pass.

Among all these choice that you have to make, the biggest problem is availability of either of these consoles. These consoles are difficult to find to buy at regular prices, so good luck buying one at retail price let alone getting a deal. Retailers stock these online and these go away in minutes.

XBOX Series S is the easiest to find and buy. PS5 and XBOX Series X are hard.
