Taking about Rahul constantly actually elevates Rahul as the main contender. Its easy to simply not talk about him and let another challenger for Modi to come about.

Modi and Shah are bumbling fools, whether you accept it or not. Whether they succeed in politics is immaterial. What is important is, what you want to happen.

The question is simple. do you want BJP to win or not? if you want BJP to lose, you won't feed their narrative.

You probably feel BJP is a better alternative, even if they are bumbling fools, and don't want to be seen as supporting BJP, since even in power being associated with BJP as a supporter can be somewhat soul crushing for someone with some standards of decency.
