US-based accelerator Y Combinator has been shifting the headquarters of its India portfolio companies to the US

Several early-stage investors with whom Inc42 had spoken, raised concerns over the shifting of startup headquarters from India to the US, which would increase administrative and legal costs. This could have been avoided had Y Combinator directly invested in the Indian entities.

If you want startups to be incorporated in India, then you need to create a startup ecosystem, which includes investors willing to take risks with outsized bets. Not just flashy entrepreneurs, and smarmy early stage investors cum incubators.

Given venture capital is mostly an underperforming asset class, very few in developing countries like India would take that kind of cut in their portfolio. Even the most successful venture capital fund returns less than stock market over long term.

bottomline: startups are the american capital game. crying about transferring HQ to US, and asking the Federal govt to step in to 'talk to ycombinator' smacks of stupidity and entitlement.

as the saying goes among capitalists: There are no free lunches. except may be when the capitalists want one. haha..
