Its not about merit, but about the network. That's always been the case though except a few programs where Ivies might have an edge on research. And honestly speaking unless your job is in a research oriented field, it makes little difference. But the effect that having an Ivy league degree makes in opening corporate America doors is un-mistakeable. Not a surprise these poor students slog day in and day out to get into some of them. I believe the best approach for Indian parents would be to not push them too hard to get into Ivies, and instead let them study demanding and rigorous fields of study in any good public university. At the end of the day, if a rat race is what people want, that's what they'll get. but the terms of that race will keep on changing. It used to be standardized tests (fairest way to determine merit), but it can be whatever in the next 10yrs. including nudging students to produce certificates of trace amounts of blackness in their genetic makeup may be. hehe.. institutions are weird like that. It has nothing to do with social justice mandates, but the general direction of who the institution has to please to keep its 'eminent' status intact.
