The Tata group has finally taken over Air India, the government of India run airlines. In October last year, Tata group bought debt ridden Air India for Rs 18,000 crore and today, the Tatas have fully acquired the airlines. On this occasion, Tata sons chairman N Chandrasekharan met Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“We are totally delighted to have Air India back at the Tata group and are committed to making this a world-class airline,” said Chandrasekharan post meeting PM Modi. “You arrival was much awaited, @airindiain,” tweeted the Tata Group’s Twitter handle.

Air India owns 141 aircrafts, 42 leased planes and 99 are owned. Tata will get all the aircrafts and along with this Air India controls over 4400 domestic and 1800 international landing and parking slots at domestic airports as well as 900 slots abroad. All these landing, parking and abroad slots will be taken over by Tata from today.

The Tata group also operates Vistara and AirAsia and according to highly reliable sources, the Tata group is planning to bring all the three airlines into one fold. The core management team of Tata is working on it.

Air India was debt ridden mainly due to operational issues. Over the last decade the government of India has provided financial assistance of Rs 1.10 Lakh crore to Air India, yet the losses mounted. Currently Air India is incurring Rs 20 crore loss per day and with the debts becoming a huge burden, the government of India has decided to sell to private firms that have experience in aviation. Accordingly an auction was called and Tata group bagged it.

The Tata group want to make Air India affordable and ensuring it contributes to boosting ‘Ease of Living’ for citizens

A world class airline in the making…

A little bit of pro market incentives by the government and Tara’s can really make Air India a world class airline. Vistara is already a star class and TaTa and SIA are proving that they can run an airline well.

Yes... Money is in business travel and middle Eastern airlines have strong hold.

Only parents travel mostly in air India... They can easily fill 2 times the current levels as people want to avoid  break in dubai

Vistara is making steady progress...within 3 years, Vistara will be flying to at least 5 US cities.

Air India, will primarily concentrate on non-US market where it has considerable presence and prime slots like Canada, UK, Europe, Far east and Down under...

They have applied and got EWR already...and IAD, ORD next in line.

Vistara are awaiting B787 Dreamliner's from Boeing...which they plan to use on these routes. If not for the pandemic, they would have already started DEL-EWR.

Pro market incentives enti already brand new fleet ne echaru at nominal price … most of the loan burden of air India is due to new fleet purchases within the last 10-15 years …

Not really. The fleet is partially new but not the best in class. B777-200’s are gas guzzlers. The only worth planes are B787 which are making most of the money for Air India now. They gotto retire at least 30-40% of the fleet right away.

The biggest challenge for them is the capital needed for operating the airline and refinancing 15k debt. At least 8000 crores for operating costs in the next one year and another 15k for existing debts. It’s better they sell all of their B787’s and B777’s and lease new air crafts for long haul. At least they get to save on maintenance.
