“The first charge of abuse of official position related to the choice of a co-promoter for making electronic cordless telephone instruments.
The court concluded that the process of selection was manoeuvred to confer a benefit on NTR’s youngest son-in-law Naren Rajan.”
“The co-promoter was initially KCP Ltd, but later L’Avenir Telecoms Ltd, owned by Naren Rajan, came into the picture in a manner that was ‘shrouded in mystery’.
Rajan was married to NTR’s youngest daughter Uma Maheswari.”

“Naren Rajan figured in another charge. Loans were granted to him among others to set up mini steel plants although loans for such units were banned by the Industrial Development Bank of India (IDBI).
The government suspended the ban, invited applications and granted financial assistance to the tune of Rs 75 lakh to each applicant.
The process showed prima facie that power had been abused by the first respondent, the judgment said.
Rajan hailed from a Kamma business family based out of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu.
It seemed he had given a great deal of trouble to NTR, even in personal matters.
He and Uma Maheswari had marital issues very early on. Later, she obtained a divorce from him.
But before that, Rajan figured in another sensational case, where he abducted the daughter of a Hyderabad-based lady, Uma Reddy, claiming that he was the child’s biological father.
Uma Reddy approached the Supreme Court, which restored her daughter to her.”

“The second charge related to Ramakrishna Studios at Musheerabad. This was a complicated matter that had been under scrutiny by the Opposition since 1983.
NTR had purchased land in 1975 measuring 8000 square yards in Musheerabad near Golconda crossroads in the heart of the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad to construct Ramakrishna Studios.
Around the same time, he applied for purchasing 1200 square yards of government land situated next to his own site.
Since Musheerabad had been declared a residential zone, he asked for zonal relaxation for building a film studio, which was permitted.
The government also ordered allotment of 1200 square yards of adjacent land at the rate of Rs 40 per square yard.
As soon as the TDP came into power, the government approved changing the use of the land into ‘local commercial use’ for building cinema theatres, etc.
The agreed rate of Rs 40 per square yard for the assigned land was slashed to Rs 15 per square yard.
The court questioned how the rate of land which was Rs 40 per square yard in 1976 could have gone down years later in 1983.
The court also found the change in classification of Ramakrishna Studios land from industrial use to commercial use indicative of abuse of official position.”

“The exemption of the land at Nacharam Ramakrishna Horticulture Studio from the Urban Land (Ceiling and Regulation) Act, 1976, was another issue in which NTR’s family, according to the court, had benefited.
The bench found that even after Ramakrishna Studios ceased to be a film production centre, the exemption granted under the land ceiling act was not withdrawn”

“The exemption from entertainment tax of Rs 1.57 lakh, granted to the cinemas owned by NTR’s sons, was also found irregular by the court.
NTR’s family owned Ramakrishna 70 mm, Ramakrishna 35 mm and Tarakarama cinema theatres in Hyderabad.
There was a provision for exemption from tax during natural calamities, national disasters, breakdown in law and order, etc.
The court, however, said that the applications for exemption were made after the period of limitation.”
