Russia helped India in the past, since it needed anti American/neutral countries as its Allies. However Dynamics have changed a lot since 1970s.
 

We should stay neutral. We will derive nothing by inclining west or east block now. 
 

India has 1.3 billion population and we are not equipped with abundant natural resources. On that note, We should maintain good relationships with everyone. As a country we can’t afford war. It’s too expensive and it will take a toll on our financial health.
