Soviet Russia invaded Finland in what they call a 40 day war back in 1939-1940 and left with a bruised and bloody nose. They won't dare do that mistake again, forget even going for Sweden.

Google about "Simo Hayha" the legendary Finnish sniper. He terrorized the red army single handedly. Finnish people put up with a severe resistance to Soviet invasion, so much so that even Stalin was forced to retreat his troops from Finland as it became a pyrrhic victory for him

He is a bully. He thrives on intimidation and violence. No one ever called him smart. Russia actually lost its competence under this guys regime.

what's the point even? Feel really bad for the people in Ukraine.

he's probably trying to show that he's as ruthless as the US (who bombed afghanistan, iraq 100 times worse than this), and that Ukraine should never think again about NATO.

He wants to depose the existing power center and replace it with one friendlier towards the Russian interests in the region.

The point is loud and clear, Russia will never see a Ukraine that's pro Western forget about being a part of NATO. He wants them to just be another Belarus aka Russian lap dog

We don't and can't understand the Russian esp the Slavic mindset. They grow up and live in much harsher conditions than we can even imagine, it would be wrong to judge his smarts from a Western lens. His kind of smarts are different from what we would term as smart in the western world but yes he was a high ranking KGB official before he entered politics and that takes a lot of ruthlessness and cunningness to achieve.

So he is undoubtedly smart.

Communism lo smartness ki pani emundhi anna. It’s all about managing the crowd and keeping the power intact. In my opinion he is not at all smart. I probably think current Chinese president Xi is smartest of all politicians in this recent times.

the point, atleast for the ukraine and similar countries being threatened by russia,china is that the west will not be of much help to them when they get attacked.

Partially true. But Pakistan has more Allies that it can count on.
 

India has literally no one. Period. Even our small sized neighbors such as Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka resent us passionately.

So he is undoubtedly smart. 

 

Its simple Russian nationalism. Russians tried liberal democracy after failure of USSR, it didn't work for them. So they voted for a dictator who promised to bring back glory days of Russian empire (not communism).

Putin actively arrests and kills communists in Russia. So does Xi Jinping in China. communists in China are in mortal danger for a while now.
