They are effed so badly by EU, ruble down 41% against dollar, all European nations selling securities and bonds invested in Russia, even if the sanctions are rolled back it has lost the investors confidence- that money is not coming back until Putin is at the helm.

Russia's financial system is being hit from this morning with something far from a normal set of sanctions, and better seen as a form of economic war.

It is the deployment of of heavy weaponry in a financial theatre of war. And it is designed to push the whole of Russia in to as deep a recession as possible, with the added chaos of bank runs.

It could exact from Russia, an immediate price in terms of its financial and social stability, for the invasion and bombardment of Ukraine, and bring that home to the Russian people, and anyone in the Russian elite harbouring doubts about their President's actions.

Targeting a central bank of a G20 nation is unprecedented. In the words of the European Commission, it is intended "to paralyse" the ability of the Russian Central Bank to defend the Russian financial system from sanctions. As the White House said explicitly: "We are planning to impose measures to ensure Russia cannot use its Central Bank to support its currency and undermine the impact of our sanctions". As the Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said, the Allies are "doing all we can to degrade the Russian economy".

Central Banks normally have sovereign immunity. The targeting of the Russian Central Bank is occurring explicitly in order to disarm the Russian state's $630 billion war chest of defences. On the day of invasion, interventions using these reserves helped rescue the rouble after it slumped to a record low against the dollar.

Former Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov wrote on Twitter that the West was "freezing Russia's international reserves" by targeting the Central Bank.

"There is nothing more to support the rouble. Turn on the printing press. Hyperinflation and economic catastrophe are just around the corner," he added.

These measures make the rouble a one way downward bet in today's currency markets. The exclusion of the top Russian domestic retail banks from the Swift messaging system at the same time creates some domestic uncertainty. The Russian Central Bank had to reassure the public and the markets that it had unlimited roubles to ensure stability of the system. There are risks that the market fallout will spread beyond Russia.

But it is a unique weapon, designed for a unique situation. Nations representing half the world's economy, using many levers of financial might against one representing 2% of the world economy, while keeping energy exports flowing and nuclear weapons in bunkers.

Russia's Central Bank scrambles to deal with sanctions, falling rouble

Euronews and Reuters • 46m

Russia's central bank announced a slew of measures on Sunday to support domestic markets, as it scrambled to manage the fallout of harsh Western sanctions over the weekend amid Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

The central bank said it would resume buying gold on the domestic market, launch a repurchase auction with no limits and ease restrictions on banks' open foreign currency positions.

It also increased the range of securities that can be used as collateral to get loans and ordered market players to reject foreign clients' bids to sell Russian securities.

The bank did not reply to a Reuters request for comment.

The steps came after Western allies ratcheted up sanctions on Saturday, including blocking certain banks from the SWIFT international payments system and targeting the Russian central bank, committing to imposing restrictive measures that would keep it from deploying its international reserves to undermine sanctions.

Yes his plans boomeranged

Putin's plan to conquer Ukraine in 48 hours in tatters leaving him 'humiliated'

John Varga, Michele Theil • 4h

Vladimir Putin was confident that Ukraine would surrender within two days of the invasion but his forces have instead faced intense resistance and a united EU

Boris Johnson: Putin is waging a war of choice

Russian President Vladimir Putin is said to be "humiliated" after his 48-hour Ukraine invasion plan failed.

According to British and Ukrainian defence sources, Putin believed he could capture the capital city of Kyiv and four other major cities within 48 hours of launching the invasion.

He was confident that President Volodymyr Zelensky would surrender and sign Ukraine over quickly, The Times reports.

Unfortunately for Putin, Russian troops have faced fierce resistance from Ukrainian troops and citizens.

Ukrainian diplomat Dymytro Tetriakov, first secretary at the embassy in London, told The Times that Russia's invasion hasn't gone according to plan because Ukraine "is our soil, our families, our homes."

He added that the Ukrainian people and military, with support from their allies across the world, had "no fear".

Ukrainian forces have so far surpassed expectations by preventing Russia from gaining control of their airspace.

They also blew up tanks, armoured vehicles, and brought down cruise missiles sent from Russia with a comparatively tiny army.

Ukraine only has 196,600 troops against Russia's 900,000 but have so far slowed the invading forces.

Russia has suffered heavy casualties as the invasion enters its fourth day, with The Economist reporting on Friday that the Russian army has had more casualties in 24 hours than in eight years fighting in Syria.

Putin was thought to be confident Volodymyr Zelensky would surrender quickly

The Kremlin is yet to acknowledge any widespread casualties or issues with the invasion.

Some reports have also claimed that Russian soldiers are now refusing to fight.

Taras Kuzio, a research fellow at the Henry Jackson Society, said today: "Ukrainian News Channel 24: 5,000 Russian soldiers in staging area in Russia, North of Kharkiv, have revolted and are refusing to attack Ukraine."

Kuzio also claimed that reports from the front lines near Crimea showed "1/2 of Russian soldiers have turned over their equipment to the Ukrainians, again refusing to fight."

There seems to widespread anger against Putin in Russia over the invasion, with many Russians protesting in Moscow while some government employees have resigned as a result.

These reports were followed Russian soldiers yesterday (February 27) advanced into the city centre of Kharkiv but were pushed back by local forces and later captured.

Oleh Synyehubov, the governor of Kharkiv Oblast, said that the soldiers had been taken into custody by the Ukrainian army.

He said: "The Russian soldiers, who were taken captive, talk about total extortion and demoralisation, they have nothing to do with the central command, do not understand and do not know their further actions.

Russian troops have suffered severe casualties, both in terms of equipment and soldiers(SWNS)

"Since the beginning of the attack on Ukraine they do not receive food and water, the technology has no fuel supplies."

Around 22,000 Ukrainian troops have been trained by the British Army since 2015, which could explain their ability to hold their own against Russia – especially if Russian troops are "very green".

Kevin Price, a former major who served 20 years with the British military, told The Times that the soldiers advancing were inexperienced in comparison to Ukrainian forces who have massively improved in recent years.

He added that the current military strategy does not make much sense, asking: "Is Putin just throwing in a whole bunch of youngsters to the fight to get the sense of what Ukrainian forces are like, and holding back the more battle-ready troops?"
