Where soviets failed economically

THe recent destruction of an-225 - the largest plane ever built in the world - bought focus to the awesome industrial might of soviet union. The plane was built in 1985.

Soviets sent the first man to space, first animal to space, first inter planetary travel, invented many medicines, had advanced military stuff - then how they failed ?

And all of this was done by simple govt employees receiving standard salary.

One explanation is that this model  - while worked beautifully in advanced stuff - failed badly in basic stuff like making 100 varieties of cola or ensuring enough wheat and meat in grocery stores.

Chinese used to be shocked when visiting soviet professors use to take large bottles of coca cola with them when they were leaving.

Unfortunately soviets then did not realize that these are easy stuff and can be fixed easily with some reform like chinese did.

No ba. Chinese did not collectivize ancient industry like farmers - they let farmers operate like independent businessmen - despite the fact the land was owned by state. They used to distribute the land to farmers and then farmer is his own boss. This created some competition and bought some market energy to economy.

Soviets collectivized even basic things like farming also. It is possible to be excited by science when working on a govt salary but who will grow wheat or rice on standard salary - they got away doing as less as they can - leading to food shortages.

Chinese model is that key factors of production - energy, communication, transport, education (which produces labor) and most importantly land is all owned by state. You only compete purely on the skills you bring. Lets say you run cola business in china - you dont have any advantage in land or labor - the only thing you compete is on your formula and your hardwork in marketing it. you dont control water supply, no special finance access gatra.

Chinese reforms started in 1978 but you know thats barely any reform. I think until 90s private businesses were allowed only maximum of 8 employees - any more than 8 it is considered exploitation.

Until 95 or 96 no private businessmen was allowed to join the party or have any political position.

Most of the businesmen also had no private capital when they started business - loss making govt enterpises in some basic cola stuff was sold to employees who had some money - thats how their capitalism started - ffrom workers. Not doras or zamindars like here.

yea - thats one thing they regret- they have too few babies last year. They cannot allow immigration also as many chinese still have painful memories of not allowing more than one child - it creates more anger.
