Energy and telecom were top and had huge growth potential at that time… Reliance spent billions laying OFC across the country at that time (before the split).. he just messed up the telecom business… Mukesh is now showing how to run the telecom business l..

Reliance mobile had huge competition that time. Look at Vodafone, Aircell, Airtell and etc where they are now. Some telecom companies around that were closed later. Mukhesh succeeded in Telecom because beause of his investment in internet data at right time. When Anil was given Telcom, it was not really bright time to shine around that time. Probably, he has other businesses which may have prospects. To conclude, he is not a business man material.

Anil Ambani is a great salesman but a terrible manager. He should have let Mukesh Ambani lead reliance and worked under him doing PR stuff 

In his bid to overshadow his brother he got overlevreged and invested in segments that were losing huge amount of money like cinema field 

His film, theatre venture lost him almost 3 bil$ , that's precious money not invested in telecom. Reliance did not have enough cash to expand GSM business and fell behind with CDMA

And the power business was just short sighted , hype driven. he bid on so many plants without sourcing fuel and couldn't honor those winning bids and had to pay huge amount of bribes / fines including  krishnapatnam UMPP 

He was also involved in contract business where those working under him swindled so much money. 

Also ventured into so many new segments without any professional management structure like couriers , insurance , investment firm , etc
