MIAL, the Mumbai airport operator, has requested Air India to quit its land, which comprises four Air India worker colonies with over 1,600 households, according to sources. According to the sources, Air India has been utilising around 7,50,000 square metres of land around the Mumbai airport at discounted rates for decades. On January 27, the Tata Group took over the operations of Air India. After a successful bidding process, the Centre sold the airline to the Tata Group on October 8, last year.

In the 1950s, the land was leased out by the Maharashtra government to the Centre-run Airports Authority of India (AAI).
