Elest, a subsidiary of gold retailer Rajesh Exports, will be setting up the country's first display fab facility in Telangana with investments worth Rs 24,000 crore.

Telangana IT Minister K T Rama Rao along with Chairman of Rajesh Exports Rajesh Mehta announced setting up of Generation 6 AMOLED Display FAB, an official release said here on Sunday.

The Telangana government signed an MoU with Karnataka-based Elest for the proposed fabrication unit which will manufacture next generation displays for smartphones, tablet computers, and laptops.

 

 

 

Rama Rao tweeted: "Historic day for Telangana. Rajesh Exports (Elest), a Fortune-500 company, to setup India's first Display FAB to manufacture the most advanced AMOLED displays, with an investment of Rs 24,000 crore, making it one of the largest investments in high-tech manufacturing sector in India."

Elest, incorporated by the promoters of Rajesh Exports, a global Fortune 500 company, would be setting up the Display FAB in technological association and with technology inputs from some of the most advanced and finest research centres across the world, the release said.

Rama Rao further said having a display fab in Telangana would put India on a global map at par with select few countries such as China, USA, and Japan.

"Since the announcement of India Semiconductor Mission, the Telangana government has been working on a mission mode to have a Fab in the state and this investment will provide us further encouragement to continue our efforts," he said.

The government is confident that having a display fab in the state will be a major boost to the thriving electronics and IT ecosystem in the state and its ancillaries, he said.

Telangana puts India on the world map of advanced high-tech manufacturing.

With the announcement of this investment, Telangana emerges as a front-runner in the semiconductor and display fab sector, the release said adding it is one of the largest investments in the country's electronics sector and the largest ever investment by size in Telangana state.

The display fab would be set up under the India Semiconductor Mission programme of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India.

Chairman of Rajesh Exports Rajesh Mehta said the display fab in Telangana would attract some of the finest global talents in the next generation technology and would generate direct opportunity to more than 3,000 people, including scientists and advanced technology professionals.

"It would create a much larger ecosystem of partners, ancillaries, suppliers, generating thousands of jobs. Elest is confident that the setting up of the Gen6 AMOLED Display manufacturing facility will generate a global interest and would ensure future technology growth in our country, he said.

Elest would also be setting up a research and development centre for research in the next generation areas of advanced display technology, the release added.

This is a big big win as a lot other big names going to follow suite, fab units require a lot of water and electricity, fortunately Telangana made right investments after 2014 to make it surplus water and power along with a bustling tech ecosystem in Hyderabad 

 

Five firms submit Rs 1.53 lakh cr proposals to set up semiconductor, display plants

The government has received proposals from five companies for setting up electronic chip and display manufacturing plants with investment of Rs 1.53 lakh crore, an official statement said on Saturday. Vedanta Foxconn JV, IGSS Ventures, ISMC propose to set-up electronic chip manufacturing plants with USD 13.6 billion investment and have sought support of USD 5.6 billion from the Centre under the Rs 76,000 crore Semicon India Programme.

"The applications have been received for setting up 28 nanometer (nm) to 65 nm semiconductor fabs with capacity of approximately 120,000 wafers per month," the statement said. The government is providing financial support of up to 40 per cent for chips above 28 nm to 45 nm and up to 30 per cent for setting up manufacturing units for 45 nm to 65 nm wafers. Vedanta and Elest have proposed to set up display manufacturing units -- used in mobile phones, laptops etc -- with projected investment of USD 6.7 billion. They have sought support of USD 2.7 billion from the Centre under the scheme for setting up of display fabs in India, the statement said.

"Indian semiconductor market stands at USD 15 Bn in 2020 and is estimated to reach USD 63 billion by 2026. The semiconductor manufacturing process is a complex, capital and technology intensive process of fabricating semiconductor wafers.

"India Semiconductor Mission, which has been set up as a dedicated institution for Semicon India Programme, has received 5 applications for Semiconductor and Display Fabs with total investment to the tune of USD 20.5 Bn (INR 153,750 crore)," the statement said.

The government closed the first round of application window for the Semicon Programme on February 15 but will start another round based on interest from the industry. The government expects investments of around Rs 1.7 lakh crore and 1.35 lakh jobs to be created in the next four years under the incentive scheme for semiconductors approved by the Cabinet. Besides electronic chip and display plants, four companies -- SPEL Semiconductor, HCL, Syrma Technology and Valenkani Electronics -- have registered for semiconductor packaging. Ruttonsha International Rectifier has registered for compound semiconductors. Three companies -- Terminus Circuits, Trispace Technologies and Curie Microelectronics -- have submitted applications under the Design Linked Incentive Scheme.

"India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) will coordinate with the applicant companies who have also reached out to states to provide access to world class infrastructure. "It will work closely with the state governments to establish high-tech clusters with 300 - 500 acres of developed land, 100 KVA Power, 50 MLD (millions of liter per day) water, availability of natural gases and common facility centres for testing and certification," the statement said. The government will negotiate the structure and quantum of fiscal support with the applicants.

The fiscal support under the scheme shall be provided on pari-passu basis for a period of six years from the date of approval. Apart from fiscal support, semiconductor fabs set up in India will be supported through purchase preference in procurement of electronic products by the government under the Public Procurement (Preference to Make in India) Order.
