Ultimately tech stocks were inflated due to the cash pumped into the post-Covid economy and a lot of these companies overhired, said Andrew Duffy, behavioral economist and co-founder and CEO of incentive management platform Sparkplug. The onset of high inflation and unrealistic growth expectations means they have to cut back, Duffy stressed.

 

“The current layoff contagion is likely more opportunistic than anything,” he said, in an email. “When lots of companies are doing layoffs any leader who has been thinking about cutting costs has an easy opportunity to jump on the layoff train without risking pushback from their board or shareholders. They end up looking prudent rather than profligate.”

He pointed to Tesla CEO Musk’s assertion that any layoffs at the company won’t affect factory workers or hourly workers, just salaried workers
