Andhra Premier League

The Andhra Cricket Association (ACA) has launched the Andhra Premier League (APL) Twenty20 tournament with six teams.

Andhra is the latest state to join the T20 franchise bandwagon in India. APL, like other state leagues, aims to provide a platform for youngsters to showcase their talent in the shortest version of the game.

The franchise-based APL will be played in Visakhapatnam from July 6 to 17, the organisers said. The teams’ logos were unveiled on Tuesday (June 21) in Visakhapatnam.

The six teams in APL are – Uttarandhra Lions, Rayalaseema Kings, Godavari Titans, Coastal Riders, Bezawada Tigers and Vizag Warriors.

Ahead of the tournament, a players’ auction, similar to the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be held on June 24. According to ACA, 368 players are set to go under the hammer. There will be 12 ‘icon’ players, with each team have two of them.

The base price for icon players is ₹2 lakh. The total purse for each team is ₹30 lakh. The base price for Category A is ₹1.5 lakh for 48 players, Category B is ₹1 lakh for 83 players and Category C is ₹50,000.

All the APL matches will be telecast live on Star Sports Telugu. The matches will start at 1 pm and 6:30 pm.

After the league phase, the top teams will compete in Qualifiers and Eliminator, like in the IPL.

“We are leaving no stone unturned, and the players will be hosted in two-star hotels and ACA for the first season will be bearing the cost of accommodation, food and transport. We are also bearing the player kit to the tune of about ₹30 lakh,” ACA treasurer Gopinath Reddy said.

In May, the ACA announced that it had got permission from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to conduct APL.

Six franchisees release their team logos

Andhra Premier League (APL) is all set to commence from July 6. The format of the game is similar to the IPL (Indian Premier League) and in its first season six teams will be vying for the cup.

The team logos were unveiled here on Tuesday by the franchisee owners and the ACA officials. The teams include Uttarandhra Lions, bought by KVR Estates; Rayalaseema Kings (Dasaradharam Reddy); Godavari Titans (Malvin Global Energy); Coastal Riders (Surya Granites); Bezwada Tigers (Andhra Hospitals); and Vizag Warriors (Pulsus Group). The franchises have taken the rights for three years.

Addressing the media, CEO of ACA M. Siva Reddy said this was one of the biggest event for ACA after Andhra had played the first Ranji Trophy match in 1953. He said that the matches and the tournament were being played as per the BCCI norms and anti-corruption officers from BCCI would oversee the tournament.

Player auction

About 368 players would be going under the hammer at the auction that would be held on June 24. Anchor and auctioneer Charu Sharma would be conducting the auction.

The players had been picked from 452 applications, based on their track record in 1:3 ratio, said former Ranji player and member of the government council R.V. CH Prasad.

Among the 368 selected players, 12 are iconic players, who are basically leading Ranji players, and each team can have two iconic players.

The base price for iconic players had been fixed at ₹2 lakh with the player purchase kitty being limited to ₹30 lakh for each franchisee, said Gopinath Reddy, treasurer of ACA.

“We are leaving no stone unturned, and the players will be hosted in two-star hotels and ACA for the first season will be bearing the cost of accommodation, food and transport. We are also bearing the player kit to the tune of about ₹30 lakh,” he said.

According to him, APL would give the young players a solid platform to showcase their talent.

While the base price for iconic players is ₹2 lakh, for category A it is ₹1.5 lakhs for 48 players, category B it is ₹1 lakh for 83 players and for category C it is ₹50,000 for the rest. The players range from U-19 zones to Ranji trophy.

Each team could have 20 players and four support staff, including the coach and physio.

Title sponsor

The title sponsor for the tournament is Shriram Group, and it would be called as Shriram APL, said Mr. Siva Reddy.

The matches would be telecast live by Star Sports (Telugu), which has purchased the telecast rights for ₹2 crore and on a daily basis two matches would be played. One will be played from 1 p.m. to 4.20 p.m. and the other will be played from 6.30 p.m. to 9.50 p.m.

In tune with the IPL format, there would be one eliminator and two qualifier matches, before the final that would be played on July 17.

APL will promote and inspire new talent, says Charu Sharma

‘T20 is evolving and it is the future of cricket’

Andhra Premier League, which is set to commence on July 6, is the perfect platform to promote and inspire young and raw local cricketing talent, said Charu Sharma, sports commentator.

He is here to conduct the auction of players for the T20 Andhra Premier League (APL) on Friday. The league is being conducted by the Andhra Cricket Association (ACA). Shriram group is the title sponsor.

Appreciating the ACA for coming out with a good T20 league model, he said, T20 cricket had been a game changer and it was because of this model that the Indian cricket had over 250 brilliant cricketers waiting in the wings for a place in the 20-member Indian team, in any format.

“Our bench strength has grown enormously and it can be justified by saying that we have at least 10 world-class fast bowlers, apart from those playing, waiting for a break,” he said.

“For the cricket perfects test matches may continue to be the real game of cricket, but T20 is evolving and it is the future of cricket. It is the format that will take people where they want to go,” said Mr. Sharma.

According to him, the world was moving towards T20 cricket and league formats such as the APL were the perfect platform for grooming home-grown talent.

“In India, we already have about four States such as Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Saurashtra promoting the T20 league and they have become the happening places for the T20 scouts. Days are not far when scouts from various IPL franchises will be quietly sitting in the stands and spotting talents from APL for their respective teams,” he said.

Earning opportunity

According to him, the starting of APL was a good idea by the ACA, as it would not only give a break to some local talent and motivate them to play better, but it would also enable a dreamy-eyed cricketer to make some money.

There were many players in IPL who had made it big from leagues such as TNPL and KPL.

“In the earlier days, only the top 20 cricketers were earning money, but now due to IPL and other local leagues such as APL, TNPL and KPL, at least 500 to 600 cricketers are making a living professionally. Not only cricketers, but even support staff are also making a living,” he said.

Talking about the auction of players, he said for APL this was the first season and hence it would be a total auction for all the 20 players, including the captain.

Mock auction

The franchisees were all set for the auction, as the ACA had organised a mock auction with Mr. Sharma on Thursday evening.

About 368 players have been selected to go under the hammer and 120 will be selected by the six franchisee teams.

Each team will have two iconic players, which is mandatory and who will be from the Andhra Ranji team. The rest will be from U-19 district to senior district players.

The ACA has compiled a book with the statistics of the players, to give the franchisees a peep into the players whom they intend to select and buy.
