All this discussion started with Baahubali. Rajamouli triggered this trend. Otherwise we almost forgot Mani Ratnam.

actually I only came into this discussion because you said tamil industry is jealous of rajamouli in this thread. and that they are in identity crisis in another thread.

otherwise I personally think right now Telugu industry has better young directors than in Tamil. Tamil films are too preachy atm. rajamouli gurinchi I won't talk. I don't care about him.

Praveen Sattaru- first movie LBW. That's a wonderful take on Indian love and weddings. I agree with you on the rest. Well except on Rajamouli is trash. He is one that knows what sells. There's a point or two to learn from his marketing. 

Comparing SSR and Mouli, well that's taking it too far. Different sensibilities and different genres.

even if Malgudi Days is based off a mediocre english book series by RK Narayanan, the way it was presented on TV is still memorable.

even if Mahabharata was an epic on a grand scale with complex well written characters, the way it was presented was in the form of a daily serial that lakhs watched every sunday. and they forgot about it today.

same RM too. people will forget him faster after his PR subsides.

The Tamil cinema fans tried to elevate the movie as the next big thing coming from India, but most were left unimpressed. Many on social media are commenting that Mani Ratnam has become over-ambitious and has attempted something which he is not capable of. Some are saying that Mani Ratnam should stick to making love stories which are his forte. Netizens also commented that Mani Ratnam fell into the trap of dominating SS Rajamouli. Mani Ratnam considers himself the first pan-Indian director after films like Roja and Bombay. But SS Rajamouli has become the biggest director of all time from India after Baahubali and RRR. Now Mani Ratnam wants to surpass him, and Ponniyin Selvan is an effort in that direction. But going by the teaser, many felt that Mani lacks the understanding of making a contemporary magnum opus. Many also pointed out that he also doesn’t have the knowledge about the use of VFX or choreography of war scenes. His execution looks outdated and doesn’t match the standards set by Baahubali or RRR. Mani ratnam & shankar are amazing directors but the biggest problem is that they are out dated. 
aparichithudu, okke okkadu, bharateeyudu etc amazing movies. Current shankar cannot make that magic again.
