Next time your cousin/friend who has settled in the US says he makes Rs 80 Lakhs a year, tell him you only need Rs 23 Lakhs to match his lifestyle in India. This is how Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) works.

PPP, an interesting economic concept is a rate at which the currency of one country would have to be converted into that of another country to buy the same amount of goods and services in each country.

PPP is an important factor that most people ignore while taking a job or shifting to a foreign. This may be a useful metric when you can compare job offers where you have a Rs 30 Lakhs offer to stay in India or settle in the US with an Rs. 80 Lakhs offer.

Obviously, this simple PPP conversion is not enough as developed countries also offer public infrastructure, technology, services, opportunities, and social security as a whole. However, you can still take it into consideration among other factors.

Comparing $ to Rs …missing lot of factors…

relative value of $ is different in every state compared to the local state conditions…I dont think rupee value differs this much state to state in india…

PPP does not apply to countries like india with pathetic hygiene standards. Even if mcd burger in india is half the price - the drive to it in traffic conditions, the water quality, the crowds negate it fully.

TO see real PPP one must go to china. THey have almost or even better infrastructure than any country in the world and food is still cheap.

Thier people worked for it. The govt enabled that work become infrastructure instead of bribes and wastage. People will work if you respect them for work. how is it possible in a society which gives more importance to caste.

No. america is good for all best reasons, you can work with higher pay if you have talent without stopping yourself at 100k or do 2 jobs and earn more. Coming to usa is one of best decisions for many which changed their middle class lives

In USA, cost of living varies from cities to suburbs to rural areas… even in cities there are many tiers..

same in India too… it is not apples to apples comparison..
