They know it is a slow pitch and it is hard to bat as the match progresses .. so it is better to have as many runs as possible in the first innings.. everyone was shocked with their decision to declare so early especially with wickets in hand.. another 50 runs would have made the match totally different.. If India needs to win, they have to take the best bunch from FC cricket and make them play crunch series. Get rid of the entire current crop, they have been playing since 10-15 yrs and that's a lot.
