In the book, he gets killed by Qarl.. no one knows why he killed.. the reason is kept open to interpretation.. they are trying to portray Rhaenyra as a positive character and Alicent as a negative one so that the audience can sympathize with Rhaenyra.. but they are both grey characters in the book.. both of them have their goods and bads..
