i don't give much attention to cgi or hype…

there's a lot mani has crammed in the 150mins. some thrilling revelations from the book being shown in passing.

but surprisingly the book readers have loved it. atleast most of them.

already the book has been shot as a serial twice in tamil, and played in stage drama dozens of times over the decades, so they only want to watch the movie version.

so calls asking for this to be taken as a web series are pointless. for now.

if you've watched the recent movie Dune - which was criticized for the hammy way it was adapted... PS1 is somewhat similar to that. But Dune is way more gorgeous. PS1 is uneven visually. some parts gorgeous, some with obvious vfx.

basically I was kinda bored while reading the novel midway since I realised historical fiction books are not my type. but I can easily imagine a visual spectacle with this.

btw I watched ps1 thrice. It was amazing.

Velpari book in Tamil..? Or any other language…

Tamil sangam literature not much translated to other languages…

Velpari is a recent book. may be 2010 published. It is based on sangam works, especially of poet kabilan who was Velpari's friend and court poet.

a lot of the novel is fiction, sometimes wading into fantasy with depictions of mysterious animals in the forest that can eat whole elephants. But the basic story of the novel is true. 2000yrs earlier there existed a mountain chieftain who was undefeatable by the three great empires chola, chera, pandya, and was finally tricked into giving up his own life.

or may be his friend kabilan the poet made up the whole story about Pari. who knows.

I dont know if there's an english version of the book. I'm sure it'll be available soon, since the book is selling like hot cakes ever since it has been rumoured that Shankar is making this book into a movie.

80% of the book is descriptions of the mountain that velpari rules. Its animals, plants and its ecosystem.

and how velpari uses it against its enemies and can never be defeated in battle.

@dasari4kntr you have to remember to not fall for a lot of mythmaking in Tamil circles about Sangam literature.

Tamil Sangam scholars regularly wrote and were fluent in Sanskrit too. and the modern attempts at reducing Sangam literature to some era of 'pure' tamil is just nothing more low grade provincial politics.

the dynamism of Indian history is still not accurately captured by any of the popular works, atleast in Tamil. especially in Ponniyin Selvan or VelPari.

so you have to be careful not to take any of this seriously.

Yes sure….History ki literature is always ..second hand source…not first hand source….from literature we only take names…not what they did or boasting about them…
