Lakireddy Bali Reddy, a notorious Berkeley landlord who was convicted of sex trafficking in 2001, died in Oakland on Monday, the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office confirmed. He was 84.

Reddy was found unresponsive in his home and transported to Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in Oakland, where he was pronounced dead of natural causes, according to Sgt. Ray Kelly. Telegu News International first reported his death, and said it was due to “respiratory ailments.”

At the time of his arrest in 2000, Reddy owned more than 1,000 rental properties in Berkeley and was one of the city’s richest landlords, according to the San Francisco Public Press. He was convicted of sexually abusing nearly 25 women from India between 1986 and 2001. He ultimately spent eight years in Lompoc federal prison and registered as a sex offender in California.

Student journalists from Berkeley High School uncovered his sex trafficking after 17-year-old Chanti Pratipatti (who was initially named as Seetha Vemireddy) died of carbon monoxide poisoning at one of Reddy’s properties. Her death, and Reddy’s abuse of immigrant women, galvanized local activism around sexual and labor trafficking and exploitation.

A group of Bay Area women founded Alliance of South Asians Taking Action in 2000 “in direct response to the charges against Reddy,” according to co-coordinator Anirvan Chatterjee, and urged local South Asians to hold Reddy accountable for his actions.

“ASATA is still around, and as active as ever, two decades on. Our very youngest members were born after the case first broke. Reddy’s abuse has been a catalyst for left, feminist, and progressive community organizing around all the issues that came up in the case — labor, caste, gender, and immigration,” Chatterjee said.

Screen-Shot-2021-11-12-at-4.13.15-PM-120 A message in tribute to Reddy on the website of Lakireddy Balireddy College of Engineering, which he founded in 1989.

Reddy moved to the United States in the 1980s from the state of Andhra Pradesh in India. He founded the Lakireddy Balireddy College of Engineering in his hometown of Mylavaram in 1989, and it remains open today.

The college shared a message in tribute to Reddy on its website after his passing, celebrating him for his contributions to Mylavaram.

“He was a poor man’s dream. He was also India’s favorite son. Lakireddy Bali Reddy did a (master’s degree) in U.S. He is not with us anymore. But he started an engineering college in Mylavaram. He fulfilled the wishes of thousands of students’ dreams, that’s why he is still alive (in our minds).”

@Black_tiger kodukulu em takkuva kaadhu they raped minors

The sons of a wealthy Berkeley landlord who pleaded guilty to smuggling teenage girls from India for sex were charged yesterday with "beating and raping" three additional victims.

Prasad Lakireddy, 42, of Lafayette and Vijay Kumar Lakireddy, 31, of Berkeley both pleaded not guilty in federal court in Oakland to new charges that they smuggled in and had sex with seven girls -- perhaps as young as 12 --

between 1992 and 1999.

She was very reserved and hardly any friends.. everyone knew her as she is probably the most beautiful girl - out of 1500... .... She didn't come back after 3rd year summer holidays- her only room mate at hostel got the invite by mail , that's it.. And her father came to get her things and get a TC from office... principal tried to convince him to continue the last year - even offered to allow to sit for exams without attending college. He said he will try, but said their inlaws are super wealthy and probably she will continue her studies there. Our principal said that's not easy as there is no way to transfer credits...

Her first name and last name both have reddy at end ...  that's how we all remember her.

Few people were able yo connect to her on yahoo messenger later ....  She opened up only once with one person.... basically said I was cheated , but couldn't go back or do anything as she has 2 sisters....   but she couldn't reveal anything about her whereabouts... discussion went on in our yahoo group for a while but no clarity., not many  really cared or friends with her.

She disappeared afterwards. No trace....

We even hacked her yahoo account after a year ( it's so easy to back it in those days ) - to our surprise, it's absolutely empty.  Only thing we got is account opening date , location ( CA ) etc..

After few years , some one tried to dig into what happened - he found that their parents also don't know and were reluctant to talk - they said she never returned to India or communicated a year after leaving for USA. They said in laws were  super wealthy and settled in USA for 2 generations- they agreed for marriage with zero family contact in India.... All happened in 2 weeks... Just like in movies. They stopped talking after they were told about yahoo chats... So, we all knew something fishy.

One guy  even tried to file missing person report ( almost 10 years after she came to USA ) and tried his luck with immigration... No luck.. her roommate vaguely remembered her name different from actual name in wedding card... That's common if horoscopes doesn't match. Probably she got passport with new name is one possibility.  Her yahoo handle only had last name and year of birth....

After 15 years, one of our classmates  who lives in Atlanta said he saw a person who resembles just like her in a mall - she is walking on the other side of 2nd story walkway ( with opening in between - so there is at least 50 feet gap) and said she locked her eyes with him quite a while and even reciprocated his smile. But she disappeared  when he tried to meet her...

that's our only hope that she is still alive. If she is not same person, why would she smile back ? He said age  and  all match .. she didn't look wealthy at all but seems to be healthy - dresses in jeans and top just like 30s women do.

Friday night, enough for today

if that's true why did she cut all the contact with her family?? did she regularly used to send money to her parents?

Just not him, many Telugu families ( mostly reddy wealthy people who are all settled in  USA, originally from rayala Seema ) used to bring daughter in laws from India for their sons in 1990s and 2000s.. to work as maid here... Son is either married here or have American girlfriend...

From our college one beautiful reddy girl came to USA like this - we thought she is lucky to become us citizen to wealthy family in America.. later we came to know the story - no body knows what happened to her including their parents .. they didn't even pursue police case etc as they have 2 more daughters.
