Brace yourself. This coming week, the world’s largest tech companies all report their September-quarter financial results. And I mean all of them— Alphabet GOOGL +1.16% ,Microsoft MSFT +2.53% , Meta PlatformsMETA –1.16% , Apple AAPL +2.71% ,Amazon.com AMZN +3.53% , and Intel , with special guest appearances from SAP , Shopify ,Spotify , Seagate , ServiceNow , and Corning .Every one of these companies reports results in a three-day span, from Tuesday to Thursday. At least 25% of the S&P 500’s market value will be reporting during the stretch.

Does not look like it .Bad start

Alphabet GOOGL +1.91%  -parent Google reported disappointing results for the third quarter. The search giant said revenue was $69.09 billion, up 6% from a year ago. Earnings were $1.06 a share.

Wall Street analysts expected revenue of $71 billion, up 9%, with profit of $1.27 a share.

The stock was initially down 6% in late trading following the earnings report.

This is breaking news. Read a preview of Alphabet’s earnings below and check back for more analysis soon.

When it comes to the ad-driven internet companies, Alphabet is viewed as the best house in a bad neighborhood.

Advertising spending always declines when the economy softens, and digital now accounts for two-thirds of all ad outlays. But it is the conventional view on the Street that search ads should hold up better in a downturn than display and direct response ads—which helps explain why Alphabet (ticker: GOOGL) shares this year are down 30%, while Meta META +6.01%  (META) is off more than 60%.

We will get fresh evidence of the validity of that theory when the parent of Google and YouTube posts Q3 results Tuesday afternoon.

Street consensus estimates for Alphabet as measured by FactSet call for revenue of $71 billion, up 9%, with profit of $1.27 a share, down from $1.40 a year ago. In the June quarter, overall revenue increased 13%.

The Street sees Google advertising revenue of $56.9 billion, up 8% from a year ago, with YouTube ad revenue of $7.5 billion, up 3.5%, and Google Cloud Platform revenue of $6.7 billion, up 34%.
