Watched PS-1 telugu version in the weekend(Fri 1st half and Saturday 2nd half) after it got released in the OTT.

Movie has surely Mani ratnam's classic touch , but it lacked the period-drama cinematic experience if we compare with likes of Bajirao Mastani,Padmaavat..

Plus : Sets , Costumes, film locations, photography and Mani ratnam screenplay were top notch.
Minus : Movie is not throughly engaging, some characters were underdeveloped and had little screen presence , Songs should have been better , fights were mediocore

On the lighter note, It gave impression that Male Characters are after women like Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar has weakness towards his younger wife's beauty , Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan flirts with every other women even Nandini , Aditha Karikalan has this backstabbing from Nandini that he always feels like a lost boy.

Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan.:  Initially they started with Vijay and then went to Sethupathi and finally replaced by Karthi.
Sundara Chola :  Amitab Bachhan is replaced by Prakash Raj
Arulmozhi Varman :     Mahesh Babu was initially cast and later went to Jayam Ravi
Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar :  Rajnikanth wanted that role but Mani Ratnam denied since it would upset the fans and gave to Sarat Kumar
For the leading female roles, Jyothika, Anushka Shetty(she left since Vairamuthu was retained) , Priyanka Chopra , Amala Paul,Keerthy Suresh were considered initially

Lyricist :  Vairamuthu was retained fo lyrics but it received huge displeasure from netizens,
as the latter was accused of sexual misconduct and harassment by several women singers and artists from the Tamil film industry.

Arunmozhi Varman has 2 girls after him. both of them are in the movie.

vandiyadevan also has a girl pining for him in the book, who is somewhat central to the plot. But she was removed in the movie. Her name is just mentioned once when Trisha walks into the meeting and teases them with marriage of her brothers. Her name is manimegalai.

It stuck faithfully to the book. thats all.

It should be named Kalki's Ponniyin Selvan, but due to potential for copyright issues in the future, they only credit kalki in passing in the movie.

low budget. 235cr for 2 movies. I think he did rather well with casting.

Vikram was the lone disappointment with his overacting. but I don't blame him for that. I blame the director for twisting the character in the book and presenting him as a part psycho.

He made this on a tight budget and its impressive to look at.

movie is not moving though, nor does it have anything interesting to say. I prefer movies like Tumbbad compared to crap like this. Or even worse like bahubali. but maniratnam is way too old to make a good movie now. he's far too gone.

just koncham hindutva dose penchi, hindu king ani prominent ga pettintey inko couple hundred crores vachedi movie ki... entha chethha movie aina.. just rendu elevation scenes chaalu.

Arunmozhi was pretty badass. but most of what he does probably went over people's heads, because he talked very little. he's also my fav character in the whole book.

Maniratnam could've handled his introduction just like in the book, where he thoroughly defeats vandiyadevan after surprising him with an attack. But it was unremarkable scene to watch in the movie. Same with the scene he flees on the elephant. It was written so well in the book, but none of that magic is shown on the screen.

the movie was made on a very tight budget obviously to cash in on the popularity of the book in TN. you saw how well the movie did in TN right?

great thing about Tamils is 3rd day kay, Raja Raja Chola is not a Hindu king ani cheppesaaru.. North lo oka 1 week nadipintaaru aa headlines ni. movie ki already unna koddi interest kooda dobbintundhi..

may be Pen movies who they sold the movie to in the north, didn't give them a good deal. They didn't give two hoots about self sabotaging their own movie. Kamala haasan did it, but I have to assume it came straight from maniratnam himself.

Lyca must be fuming. haha..

movie doesn't have to be good to be huge hit. PS1 and RRR are proof of that.
