yes. controversy cheyyala. because movie teesindhey daani kosame. Hindu is a political term here. Its nice to have people wanting to dissociate themselves from it. Majority of people during raja raja chola times were jains. not shaivites or vaishnavites.

Princess Kundavai was a vaishnavite. arunmozhi was a saivaite with leanings towards buddhism.

likely maniratnam doesn't have any strong opinions about the 'hindu' thing, though he seems reluctant to join mainstream India by adamantly refusing to learn Hindi. Kamala haasan too.

but the thing is, when the book got released, written by a Hindu nationalist (kalki.. you can see several pages where he extols greatness of Hindus and paints muslims as savages in the book).... and yet DMK was the one that owned this book and popularized it.

yes, its well written.. and kalki has written better books than this, and none of them achieved the cult status that this one did. DMK used it as part of their cultural reawakening of tamils. So they take it up on them to constantly check any attempt to Hinduize the book. without DMK propagandizing this book, it wouldn't even be this popular.

the entire politics of TN revolves around building a separate identity for themselves outside of the Hindu one. Once they join the Hindu cultural framework politically, they lose all relevance and become an also ran. its that simple.

whether the separate identity of Tamils is historically true or not... it is as true as the fact that historically India was a Hindu nation. which means its not true.. and pure political garbage. but its not murderous like Hindutva.. and for that reason alone I take the tamils side. because the other side is just plain disgusting. both of them are liars though, trying to create cultural revolution in a country where malnutrition still exists.
