didn't have surgery, but had herniated disc in L5-S1 a couple of years ago.

Pain was too severe. sciatic nerve ni pinch chesthunde aa disc.. so whole right leg and back was super painful. US lo oka DR ni consult chesthe surgery chepichuko annadu.. but I didn't want to get it done and wanted to try PT first.

US lo oka 10 days physical therapy ki vella.. vadu nee insurance idhi cover cheyyadhu adhi cover cheyyadhu ani saantham nakichadu..

aa taruvatha india ki vella (trip was planned way before). India lo oka neurologist ni kalusthe nee age ki surgery endhi nonsense. if you get a surgery done, what will you do if it herniates again? malli surgery cheyinchukuntava? 30s lo asalu surgery is not preferred. what you need is a change of your postures and PT ani cheppadu..

India lo physical therapy is 300-400 rupees per 1 hour. same treatment like in US. oka 1 month regular ga every day vella PT ki.. I am doing perfectly fine now.

Disc bulgee..herniated disc's are pure mechanical things...ofcourse the pain is horrible ...with due care and pain management one can get relieved from it...

Yogic postures, PT with pain management..this can get relieved..

But if the dics touches any nerve and have any other complications better go for surgery...like bladder malfunction etc...good luck

Herniated disk - suggested steroid injections- I said no.

Used to get sciatic pain ..managed with bhujangasan and other sciatic exercises ( see YouTube) .

Andariki Thanks for all your suggestions..Prob started 2-3 years back, appudu surgery annaru but one neuro surgeon said to go with PT and surgery will be the last resort. Appudu all good ..But recently had scans in India and they told surgery is needed. US lo neuro surgeon kuda same cheppadu as nerve compression ayindi ani based on the MRI(india di). It got worse now(compared to 2 years back) and next steps are CT Scan and MRI in US & based on the scans he will tell surgery major aa minor aa and all other details. So checking if any one of you or friends had surgery and whats the downtime n recovery time enta padtundi ani.

what are you symptoms? like do you have bladder issues? only if it is really worse surgery is not recommended. i know a colleague who had surgery for slip disc issue. not sure minor or major but he was told to take  bed rest for 1yr after surgery.

Like everyone said surgery is last option. Maybe it's needed for you and if symptoms are worse and you can't manage it.

For me : if I lift weight or strain my self , I get sciatic pain ( only back , one thigh ) ... I do bhujangasan etc  for few minutes and I'm back to normal -90% pain gone. That gave me confidence that I can manage.

if 2 independent doctors said surgery is needed AND insurance approved it, probably they are right. In USA, insurance won't approve it unless they are also convinced.. subjectively

Along with PT, and yoga the one that I found very useful was disk decompression. This helped me a lot. I too have multiple disc bulges, Degenerative disks and like 4 years back pain was horrible.

Had MRI scans in India and the doctor advised never to go for surgery. So I adapted life style changes. Pain flares up every now and then but I'm used to it.

Better be active, I bought a stationary bike and everyday I cycle for like 10 mins to get the blood flowing in lower body and then inversion table helped me a lot in decompressing the back.

And be careful when you lift heavy objects, you might ignore while you lift but the consequences are too much to deal.

And one more suggestion, get a back brace, and a Tens unit.

Well, Good posture, ergonomics, core strength and exercise will cure this issue. Its a byproduct of our lifestyles.. and its not a disease.

Unless otherwise there are external factors causing the disc to bulge, it always gets set with the above..

And in US, Chinese and Vietnamese practitioners untaru.. Just like mana ayurvedic doctors in India.. Valla daggaraki velthe, they also do Physical Therapy sessions and advise you much better.. But you should also have a good understanding of the real reason of your issue/pain.. Usually these ppl charge $50 cash.. Otherwise PT is insanely expense and the processes are a bloody headache in US

US lo big headache true. Depending on the issue some exercises cannot be done and some can be. it is all about building your core strength slowly and observing which exercises are helping which ones are not.
