It is true. Millions of Indians cannot afford not just first class but also flight tickets. Millions still live in poverty.

70% of India's wealth is controlled by some 1700 families. Whoever made that comment is spot on!

Only chest thumping nationalists get offended by these comments instead of acknowledging the reality.

On the other hand, China is a success story compared to India. I don't suppose they make these comments on the Chinese!

India was, is , will be a poor country. This is fact.

But Modi is saying ....

21st century is India’s: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said that the 21st century is India’s century and attributed the sudden change in India’s fortune to the commitment, strength and pledge of the 125 crore people of the country.

“For some time now, people are saying that the 21st century is India’s century,” Modi thundered in an address to a strong crowd of 18,500 Indian-Americans at the SAP Center in San Jose, which is the hub of Silicon Valley.

Asserting that he is giving every minute of his life in the service of the nation, Modi said he would live and die for the country.

Can everyone in China afford to fly first class? Generalizations and stereotypes are wrong. China as a country and chinese people are 2 different things. The gap between haves and have nots is the highest in China. I have zero problem if you want to call India poor, but India fares much better in that department. So, if your problem is with wealth distribution, then you have chosen a wrong example.

here is an IMF paper on the topic.

While the response reeks of privilege, the comment is also equally bad.

We have to give them credit where it is due. China is competing with US in terms of power & is truly a global power unlike India. I think India should start with controlling its population as a first step toward global power. China achieved it. They're heading towards automation. They know many jobs will be lost. So it's better to reduce population. Although they introduced 3 child policy now, everybody knows only wealthy people can afford having more than  2 kids.

You can't have power without managing your global image. Since independence we have only portrayed ourselves as a country of poor snake-charmers. China worked on their image since 70s and 80s. You can check movies like Jackie Chan's "Chinese Zodiac" where they directly accuse British for ruining their country and portray themselves as thousands of years old civilization. During the same time, Hollywood films like Indiana Jones portrayed us as eating insects & bugs for survival.

If we keep shaming our fellow Indians for poverty & underdevelopment, then the world continues to see as snake-charmers with a degree in software engineering.
