I didn't expect this mistake from tech veterans such as google and MSFT though.

I thought their hiring pattern was more methodical. May be they got tricked and blindsided too.

 I agree that H1s have much more to lose. But its not lite for anyone. 90% of Americans live pay cheque to cheque regardless of their economic status.

They just went by the sudden demand for online applications when everyone where sitting at home during pandemic, this led to more hiring.

Everyone failed in predicting. They thought online/digital will be forever
