I want to talk to someone who was in US during 2001 recession. just want to get a sense of how bad layoffs were back then. even 2008 will also be helpful.

I don't think our batch has been any recession or layoffs of this extent.

2008 glimpse istha patu. My senior was laid off from fulltime(he joined in 2007 dec). Consultancy lo join ayyadu. He literally worked for <$20 billing rate for almost 2 years. Wait, its not yet done. Billing rate $20 ayina h1b ki minimum undali ani valla consultancy vaadu 50k ki payroll run chesi taxes katti migilina dabbul athaniki ichevaadu. Less than <$10 per hour.

my first job contract was terminated with in 4 weeks because of budget issues. I was jobless for 3 months. Literally cleared 15 interviews in those 3 months but almost all of them got cancelled during Purchase order phase. Okkati darunam following monday start date untey friday 9pm ki email chesaru no need to come on. I was supposed to fly on Saturday. Ticket money kooda bokka.

Lot of my friends even worked in grocery stores on opt.

2009 time frame lo okka room mate vachadu. He owned a home in FL. Wife & 2 kids stay there. He stayed with us in chicago for almost a year for a peanut pay.  His family monthly expenses (mortgage, school fee etc) >> his monthly pay during that time. He was just working to slow down the burning rate of bank balance.

current status: most of the folks who suffered a lot in above mentioned scenarios are doing great now, almost all of them are well settled and can easily handle another 2008.

bottom line: recession is just a passing cloud. Just try to survive.

It can be vice versa too. Love ur employees work but not ur employees because u never know when ur employees will ditch u when they get better pay.

no personal emotions in jobs. Get the job done. Don’t hesitate to ditch when needed

2008-2009 here.. laid offs are 90% ..

Lot of Indians pushed their homes in to foreclosure. Left cars in airports ..(remember there are no tracking devices for new cars back then)..

The worst thing I saw is..car dealerships.. since cars didn't move from dealership lot , grass grew in the parking lots ..

Students not used to graute and continue masters in name of thesis or something as everyone used to have oncampus jobs

H1b filing, green card filing  was very easy ..

But one thing I remember is even with layoffs and all in 2010 marked revived and even for qa they used to pay 65$ per hour..market rates are worst these days..and on top of it inflation..

In 2008-09 we travelled around with no inflation ..very cheap rental stays and rental cars

.that being said ..we survived 2008-2009 because there was no inflation ... And we had some kind of basic job support..

But now we have recession and inflation both at same time . This is worst to happen..

you cannot talk and gain experience of such massive recessions

i think this is the time for those came in 2014-till now to experience it and learn their lessons

formula is simple, dont spend on "wants" but just the "needs", conservative financial spending is the key

but i am sure 2023 recession will last for 2-3 yrs as it will start as tech recession but slowly turn into all other sectors

by next president elections which will happen on 11/2024, market will be in total assam

next 2 yrs lo lame duck session and ByeDen can do nothing
