I was born to an illustrious family in Hyderabad. My mother is a Chitrapur Saraswat from Mangalore and half-Telugu and my father is a Bohri Muslim. My mother’s father J Rameshwar Rao was the Raja of Wanaparthy, a principality of Hyderabad. He was influenced by the socialist movement and became the first Raja to give up his title. Nehruji was fond of him and he was elected to the Lok Sabha many times. He realised that India did not have its own publishing house and started Longman India that later became Orient Blackswan and published educational books. My nani runs a famous school in Hyderabad. My great grandfather from my father’s side, Sir Akbar Hydari was the prime minister of the Nizam of Hyderabad. He was instrumental in setting up the Osmania university. His wife set up the Hydari club for women so that they could play tennis and she also set up the first girls’ school in Hyderabad. My family was extremely progressive. My parents had a love marriage, but they separated when I was two years old. I moved to Delhi with my mom, who got involved with the family business.

My mom is a thumri dadra singer and so all through my childhood, I always woke up to the sounds of the tanpura. My mother is even more pretty than I am, gentle and dignified, but has a quiet strength which I admire. She is extremely liberal, but I never misused the freedom as I never wanted to trouble her. I started singing before I learnt how to speak and learnt Bharatanatyam from an early age from Leela Samson. I was in class five and I was in my school bus coming home when I saw a boy from school whose head got crushed between a tree and the bus and I went home and got fever. From that day, if my mother did not come home by 6 in the evening, I would bawl and just sit and pray for her to come back as I realised that she was the only one in my life. After a point, my mom sat me down telling me that nothing would happen to her as she loved me a lot and that one could die even sitting at home, which is when I became better. My mother also kept me out of the custody battle she was going through with my father. Then one day, she told me that he wanted me to go to a boarding school, Rishi Valley. She asked me to just try it for a month and promised to bring me back if I did not like it. I went there and liked it and studied there.
